On 3 March 2026, EURCAW-Aqua organised an online webinar on “Welfare indicators and assessment tools for common carp during transport”, bringing together representatives from National Competent Authorities (NCAs) and state veterinary inspectors from across EU Member States.
The webinar provided an overview of operational welfare indicators and assessment tools that can support official controls during the transport of common carp, linking scientific knowledge with practical implementation. The session was opened by Dr Ivona Mladineo (Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences).
Dr Verena Jung-Schroers (University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover) presented key approaches for assessing carp welfare during transport, focusing on practical indicators that can be used during inspections. The programme also included practice-oriented perspectives from Member States: Dr Heinz Heistinger (Tierarztpraxis Lilienfeld) shared insights from Austria, while Dr Miroslaw Kuczynski (Veterinary Administration Bielsko-Biala) presented examples from Poland.
Interactive Q&A sessions and quizzes encouraged active participation and exchange of experiences among participants. The presentations were highly engaging and generated lively discussion, reflecting the strong interest of competent authorities in improving welfare assessment during fish transport.
EURCAW-Aqua warmly thanks Anna Holčáková and Tereza Kresalová for the excellent organisation of the webinar.
