EURCAW-Aqua has published a new infographic summarising its scientific advice on the welfare implications of placing live European eels (Anguilla anguilla) directly on ice before killing.
The infographic explains why European eels may remain alive and appear lethargic at low temperatures, while emphasising that lethargy is not evidence of unconsciousness. It highlights the welfare risks associated with direct exposure to ice and provides practical recommendations for appropriate holding, effective stunning and killing practices.
